The pre 1.4 tree has hooks into gpsd if compiled correctly. If you build from source and have the gpsd development libraries installed, it should work. That code was developed on ubuntu 12.04 if memory serves. I have not taken a look at that code recently so it may need updating for new versions of libgps. Let me know.
