My apologies for the email, I wasn't sure of another way to get help
with my issue.
I'm trying to compile the latest version of libgphoto2 and am having
Every time I run configure with any set of options I've tried, I get
checking for libexif to use... ./configure: line21390: syntax error
near unexpected token 'LIBEXIF,libexif'
./configure: line 21390: '
PKG_CHECK_MODULES(LIBEXIF,libexif >= 0.6.13,have_LIBEXIF=yes,:)'
While I know this is not the optimal solution, I found that if I go to
that line and comment out the offending line and hard code
have_LIBEXIF=yes, it gets past that part and then dies with the following:
checking for libusb to use... ./configure: line 15643: syntax error
near unexpected token 'LIBUSB,libusb'
./configure: line 15643: '
PKG_CHECK_MODULES(LIBUSB,libusb >= 0.1.5,have_LIBUSB=yes,:)
configure: error: ./configure failed for libgphoto2_port
Here, however, that line doesn't actually seem to appear in the file,
and there doesn't seem to be anything similar near that line number. I
can't figure out how to get around this one.
In looking around, it sounded like the issue could be an outdated
version of pkg-config that lacks the PKG_CHECK_MODULES macro, but I
installed the latest release of pkg-config and the problem persisted.
I have run into the same problem on Ubuntu 13.4 and the latest
Crunchbang Linux (Debian derivative).
Any help would be much appreciated.

You are missing the pkg-config development files that include the
Now, if you build from the tarball, you just need to run configure and
it should work - and you shouldn't run autoconf.
That's just a guess, as you don't tell.
