HTTP 1.1 supports deflate compression on data streams, which causes some sites to transfer files in compressed format with no header. In order to recover such information, it is necessary for Gzip to extract headerless files. Compression to headerless files is used for external applications to create archive formats that use deflate compression in data block, while the metadata for the compressed output is supplied by Gzip via a different stream.
