Hi Doug, this depends on how your binary has been built, I guess (but I am not sure ..) it requires --with-readline=gnu as one option to configure to provide this functionality. So, this depends on your linux-distributor and on the maintainer of your specific gnuplot package. Worst case you'd have to build the package from scratch - let me know if I can help further.
