I think I missed your initial query with an explanation of what you
are trying to do. But if the issue is simply that filling in the
background by using a rectangle has the side-effect of obscured some
plot elements or labels, the simple answer is to instead do
set term png enhanced background rgb "red"
and skip the set object / unset object
