As far as I'm concerned, we might just as well exit(EXIT_FAILURE)
immediately as any filename with leading whitespace is entered by the user
--- that's exactly the correct reaction to anybody trying to do such a
silly thing. Whitespace in the interior of filenames is quite silly
already, but leading (or trailing) whitespace is just *begging* for
I guess the original code was trying to be helpful here. But unless
this was a documented feature, I guess we can safely remove it.
