I'm a big fan of descriptive help, so I dont' need to read
too many manuals while installing it.
GDL is a good example. It uses configure,and it works
well.
However, when i wanted to use python, i ran into
problems. What exactly is the DIR in the --with-python=?

I installed my own python using
configure --prefix=/opt/python/2.3
such that the bin, lib, include etc. directory were
below the 2.3
directory.

But neither --with-python=/opt/python/2.3
nor --with-python=/opt/python/2.3/bin worked.

Perhaps the description on the screen should be made a
little more descriptive what is expected. Perhaps - and i
didn't try this - it was one more.... i.e.

--with-python=/opt/python/2.3/bin/python ???

    with_python is the directory which you specify,
    GDL uses then (configure.in):

    LIBS="$LIBS -L$with_python/lib -lpython2.3"
    INCLUDES="$INCLUDES -I$with_python/include/python2.3"

    That is somewhat irregular for INCLUDES, but it is
    compatible to the
    way python installs under linux without option.
    As a workaround a symbolic link should help (from
    "pyhton2.3" to ".").
