I decided to install Slackware 10 on a PC with a
RTL8138B card that was successfully running NT4. After
installation, I had problems with some network services
which I finally solved by changing to a completely
different network card (using the tulip driver). I
found that:

ping worked
dns lookups worked
nfs client worked
ssh client: local connections worked, remote
connections hung before asking for the password. Using
ssh -v revealed that it stopped during the
authentication method negotiation.
sshd server: connections from remote clients also
stopped during authentication method negotiation. The
result was the same using OpenSSH or F-Secure SSH

apache server: Connections from browsers hung until
timeout. Using telnet to port 80, I could complete a
HEAD request, but a GET request for the same page gave
no response.

As mentioned above, the network card worked OK with NT,
and Slackware worked OK with a different network card,
so I guess there is a specific problem between the
driver and this card.

The 8139too driver version reported by dmesg is 0.9.26

The markings on the card are:
Chip:
RTL8139B

White sticker on PCB:

Small white letters printed on PCB:

Etched in copper on reverse side of PCB:
94V-1 BP DLL
