I started looking at ECW support but as far as I know there is no direct 
geotools module for ECW yet (we only just added mrsid). It could be that 
the image moasic code makes use of imageio directly; in which case you 
are going to have to look at the imageio-ext project here to get your 
ECW game on.
I took some notes on the udig site; they amount to making sure all the 
imageio stuff from imageio-ext project are dumped into your JRE.
