As for buffered image you don't have much choice; that is how we render over to SWT (since geotools supports a java Graphics2d class for rendering ). We use the same technique to render into a texture map for those wanting draw out into OpenGL.
There are a number of Graphics2d implementations that are backed by SWT; I have not tried them.
We use a similar technique with the batik project (which has a Graphics2d that writes out SVG on the back end)
