Andrea, thanks a lot for your extensive answer! I didn't bear in mind that JTS lacks support for curves but now it's clear to me what kind of a large undertaking it would be to implement support for curves through the whole stack. I see that this kind of effort would need some serious funding and reasonable amount of time. Until that kind of opportunity arrives, and I hope that it will some day, we'll stick to workarounds with transformations to supported geometry classes. I'll soon (as in a few weeks) be involved in a project including rather complex geometry editing using OpenLayers, GeoServer and SQL Server that will (to some extent) include tools for working with curves or better to say curve approximations with line strings. Fortunately, it is not necessary to implement support for curves for some complex mathematical calculations but rather to improve visual representation of constructed features. I'll be happy to share my findings along the way if anyone's interested.
