Hi Ian, eclipse is I think the most popular ide used by GN developers - but I don't use it so am no use at all when it comes to setting it up. You could check out the HOWTOs on http://trac.osgeo.org/geonetwork/wiki/ListOfHowTos and no doubt others can help with that in more detail. I suspect you have what you need to get started on testing the server in any case. However I hope you've been able to get at the BlueNetMEST sandbox (svn co from https://geonetwork.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/geonetwork/sandbox/BlueNetMEST) and built its installer (ant installer). You can trace the server through the log files in jetty/logs and by altering the log4j.cfg file in web/geonetwork/WEB-INF to display Z3950server debug messages. You can find most z3950 code in src/org/fao/geonetwork/services/util/z3950. With regard to Archie's statement about the database (geonetwork), one of the changes we've made in the BlueNetMEST sandbox is to map the database name used in requests to the Z server to a GeoNetwork category (which is just a name against which metadata records can be searched and retrieved) - we intend to provide an interface in the Administration->System Configuration menu for users to specify that mapping. We've also made some changes to make configuration of the local Z server (and other Z servers) easier so it would be really nice if you could review those as part of the process of addressing the issues raised by others. Archie - thanks for filling in the historical facts - my post was not attempting to claim ownership of Z server implementation or changes etc (indeed I invited anyone else to take part as well) or to insinuate that anyone else had written the original Z implementation - I was trying to get the people involved who I had known to be recently active in the Z area with GeoNetwork and get some review of the bug fixes/enhancements that are in the sandbox and on the trac site for 2.5. Thanks also for filling in the details linking Eliot to Ian as well and the SUTRS issue. Subject: Re: [GeoNetwork-devel] Z3950 in 2.1 Hey Simon, many thanks for this, it's really helpful and most welcome :) Guess my first question really is whats the best way to get a shell dev system going? I've used the installer and installed the source, is that the best way for me to get the z server component up and running and be able to hack around in the guts of it, or am I better to do a fresh build from the source tree? Happy to work from the cmd line or an IDE, whichever the team favours really. What I'd really like is to get something going from scratch and then be able to throw a z3950 query at the server from a command line shell I have here, and trace the code through server side... any thoughts? Thanks again! Ian. 2009/8/12 <Sim...@cs...> Hi Ian, I think you should speak to Richard Walker at Software Improvements, John Hockaday at Geoscience Australia (cc'd into this email) and then myself as a committer with some Z bugs against my name. Not sure who else is interested but they're welcome to join in too. As for doing some testing on 2.4, I think it might be useful to use the BlueNetMEST sandbox - firstly because it has a remote search function which uses the Z3950 client side (2.4/trunk may not have this functionality connected up) and also because I've made some changes to the Z server/client and config in collaboration with Richard and John which I'm hoping to incorporate into 2.5 (or one of the 2.4.x releases). In my experience, at the basic level, Z3950 client and server functions do work (eg. in Australia with remote search to ISite servers - see the BlueNetMEST sandbox with its list of remote servers) but I'm sure John and Richard can point out the finer points that need further development/fixing and which it sounds like you might be able to really help solve. Perhaps we can arrange to get together (virtually) and discuss this further and also hear about the issues that Eliot Christan has sent to you as well? Looking forward to any contributions/help you can give provide! I meant 2.4. Long day :) 2009/8/12 Ian Ibbotson <ia...@go...<mailto:ia...@go...><mailto:ia...@go...<mailto:ia...@go...>>> Hallo all! Apologies for bumbling onto the mail-list and posting right away, hoping someone can help me out :) I'm a newbie to geonetwork, but an old hand at z39.50 and java (One of the maintaners of JZKit). Eliot christan has been in touch and would like me to volunteer a bit of help with some of the z3950 config issues he's seeing. Is there anyone out there I can talk to on chat or in an IRC room or even by skype to see how I can do some development on 2.1 to get Z3950 going? Again, apols for just blundering in, just not sure where to dig in :) Any help really appreciated! Many thanks, ian. |
