I guess you are the guy to talk to with questions like this. If you
are not and know who might be able to help, please forward the mail to
this person. Thanks!
The question: We would like to use the domain dp9.com for an internal
detail in the Gearwerk program.
The technical background is this (skip this part if you know Java):
There is a way to avoid that certain program parts (packages) of
different authors get in each other's way. This is done by preceeding
the package name (eg. 'gearwerk') by the reversed author's domain name
Now we don't have a problem to use one of out own domain names for
this, but we think it would be really nice to use the one matching the
topic of the program, 'com.dp9.gearwerk'.
The only thing you have to take care of is that nobody else uses the
same package name as we do. Since all our package names would start
with 'com.dp9.gearwerk' all other names (eg. 'com.dp9.wordprocessor'
or 'com.dp9.buckmaster') are fine.
So, is this ok with you guys?
Some additional details:
- The domain name could be later replaced with something else. This
requires some work though, so it shouldn't be done unless necessary.
(Which is why I would like to clear this before we start.)
- There will be more than one package, but all will start with
'com.dp9.gearwerk' (eg. 'com.dp9.gearwerk.example' or
- The use would be internal to the program.
- It would however be public on the source code level through the
public interfaces to our development system.
Please let me know if anything is left unclear!
Thanks in advance!
