Dates sound good to me. What do you think about appending a digit, eg "08-jul.0"? We've been thinking about software stability/freezing etc (eg sticking to a particular version of some distribution for critical applications). We'd need some way to get bugfixes though (while the mainline marches on to "08-dec.0"), incrementing the final digit to indicate "bugfix-only" would be a solution.
