Once in a while (thanks to "svn up" in the background, geany gives me this pop-up:

Question
"The file 'foo' on the disk is more recent than the current buffer.
Do you want to reload it."

Fair enough. But when this pop-up is up, my window manager (KDE) can't "Alt+Tab" to geany anymore at all. The list of windows shows one with the title "Question".
The window selection list in the task bar on the other hand still shows the main window's title, and I can select geany there with the mouse.

In contrast, if I pop up the "Find" dialog (e.g. with Ctrl+F), Alt+Tab shows me the main window and the find window, and I can choose to stop at either. The window selection list in the task bar still only shows one program.

Both Alt+Tab behaviors are peculiar. They differ, because the former is a modular, the latter a non-modular pop-up. At least the former behavior is very undesirable though. Please fix it. :-)

The "do you want to reload" dialog needs to be modal because nothing should happen until the user responds. It is signalling an anomolous condition that could cause data loss. This prevents them from accidently doing anything else that might lose data until they have made the decision.

The find dialog does not have this problem.

Your window manager is behaving correctly, you can't do anything with Geany whilst the dialog is up, thats the defined behaviour for modal dialogs.

Ok, "question" probably isn't the best window title though :)

"The window selection list in the task bar on the other hand still shows the main window's title, and I can select geany there with the mouse."

I think you will see the dialog is still in front of Geany blocking you from using it in this case. If not, that's a severe bug (in KWin?).

  • Thanks to the dialog being modal, it comes to front/focus together with the main window, so KWin is doing nothing wrong there.

But why I can't Alt+Tab to an available window beats me. BTW, this is KDE3. I should check KDE4.

  • Let's assume this is a bug in KDE, so I (the submitter) am closing it as "not a bug", which seems to be closest with "invalid" in Sourceforge speak.
