I distribute the raycasts over a number of game frames, and yes its just possible to outrun an explosion if there are numerous objects in the way ;-) As the explosion particles and animation etc. occur over time it seems reasonable for the damage to be applied over time to numerous entities. I do raycasts to a maximum of 4 entities per frame for any one explosion. YMMV. The more of your game you can distribute over multiple frames, the more consistent your frame rate will be, so its also a good thing from that point of view. Note that raycasting is by no means the best method, as an enemy or the player can be shielded from an explosion by a thin pole or somesuch which obviously isn't ideal.
