A first beta of version 3.1 of GATE (a General Architecture for Text Engineering) has been released. GATE is a framework and development environment for human language processing, originally developed at the University of Sheffield. Development moved to SourceForge earlier this year.
Major new features in this release include:
* Support for components written for IBM's UIMA framework.
* A rewritten Ontology API (this is still under development)
* An optimized compiler for JAPE grammars, from Ontotext Lab.
