I would love to play around with gaia-0.1.2 and have successfully installed it on my gentoo-box (at least it looks ok).
An x-window is popping up with grey square in it.
But what next?

Any reasons why you have you used scons instead of classical "make"-strategy?
You mean autotools? It is true that autotools are most wide-spread build system for FOSS projects. I've tried to adopt it in gaia two times, both successfull (read: it worked), but then I just couldn't make myself keep it, as it felt too ugly.
Scons gives much more control of build process, and automates many things. But actually, it is not perfect as well...
