Hello. We have a gateway/firewall computer, on which I had previously been running Smoothwall 2.0 Express. Due to an electricity supply failure and a bodgy electricity supply restoration, we lost our access to the Internet via the gateway/firewall and the ADSL modem. I subsequently tried installing Smoothwall 3.0 Express on the gateway/firewall computer, and could not get it working, and so had the computer, including its two network cards, checked, and installed Debian 5 on it. I got the computer able to access the Internet via the ADSL modem, but cannot get a workstation on the LAN, to go out onto the Internet, via the gateway/firewall computer. The ISP has been obstructive, and has provided no support, doing nothing more in relation to this issue, than erasing settings. On a local Linux Users Group mailing list, I was advised that I need to get a firewall set up on the gateway/firewall computer, in order to implement the routing needed for computers on the internal LAN, to be able to go out through the gateway/firewall computer. I downloaded and installed fwbuilder, via the Debian 5 package manager (I installed Synaptic, to deal with the package management, as I am relatively familiar with it, and it is generally easy to use). To set up the firewall, using fwbuilder, I went to the web site at http://www.fwbuilder.org/ , and found the web page at http://www.fwbuilder.org/4.0/quick_start_guide.html , which is the Quick Start Guide. That web page has " Creating a New Firewall To create a new firewall object, click on the Create New Firewall shortcut in the center of the screen. This will launch a wizard that walks you through configuring the firewall. " When I load and run fwbuilder, it does not display that shortcut or icon, and the screen has a different appearance. In finding the installed fwbuilder version, using Help -> About, I find that the version is "Firewall Builder v2.1.19". The web page at http://www.fwbuilder.org/4.0/quick_start_guide.html applies to version 4 of Firewall Builder. In going through the menu's for the installed version, I cannot find an option for "Create New Firewall", or, "<Wizard Title> Wizard" Also, in thinking that perhaps I should look for a later version (than 2.1.19) on the web site at http://www.fwbuilder.org/, I went to the web page at http://www.fwbuilder.org/4.0/docs/firewall_builder_packages.html , and, using the instructions " V4.1 package repository for Debian/Ubuntu To access the NetCitadel hosted Debian/Ubuntu repository of stable Firewall Builder packges, add the following line to the file /etc/apt/sources.list (replace "maverick" here with "lucid" or other name depending on your version): deb http://www.fwbuilder.org/deb/stable/ maverick contrib Make sure to run aptitude update after you update your repository list. aptitude update Firewall Builder packages are signed with GPG key. If you want to verify package signatures follow the steps in the section below called "Verifying Firewall Builder Package Signatures" before installing the packages. If you don't want to configure signature verification then you don't need to do anything else and you can install the current stable version of Firewall Builder by running the following commands: aptitude install libfwbuilder aptitude install fwbuilder " I added the line " deb http://www.fwbuilder.org/deb/stable/ lenny contrib " ("lenny" is the respective name for Debian 5) to the /etc/apt/sources.list file, then ran aptitude update, which returned multiple errors, so I then ran apt-get update, which returned the error " Err http://www.fwbuilder.org lenny/contrib Packages 301 Moved Permanently " Is a version of Firewall Builder, that includes a "Create New Firewall Wizard", available for Debian 5, and, is a repository available for Debian 5 (lenny), that includes that version, and, in which repository, updates will be posted? I cannot find otherwise, how to use Firewall Builder to set up a new firewall, in a way that is sufficiently simple for me to use. Thank you in anticipation. -- Bret Busby Armadale West Australia ..............
