Well, the manuals of the operations (e.g. man 2 mknod), pretty well
decribe what the VFS must do.  It's all basically done to conform to
the POSIX standard, which btw. is sometimes quite complicated: just
look at all the error conditions documented for rename().  The VFS
takes care of that all.
