When fspc is run outside x, it fails on a segmentation fault even when run in text mode (-t flag). This happens inside a call to wx code.
At the moment fspc can't be used in scripts - e.g. for system startup and suspend/resume, so this is quite critical.
Alternatively, instead of a having a text mode in the gui app, the code can be separated for an independent console app in addition to the gui one. This is a more in line with unix philosophy.
