Tried to change the save game folder. It went badly.
target destination d:\freeorion\sav

The backslash key was not accepted as input
Navigating the folder structure gave me an error because no file type was specified.

I am uncomfortable with this being in my Appdata folder. At an average of 5MB each, the 600 turns of savegames REALLY added up.
Hence I wanted to put this on a partition I do not back up.

    From config.xml

    <resource-dir>d:\Program Files\FreeOrion\default</resource-dir>
    <save-dir>d:</save-dir>

note it's d: not d:\ Now, it's coming up with an invalid path when trying to save.
And, what I was trying to create was d:\freeorion\sav which I had created for the purpose of saving.

Note: reinstalling it did not seem to change config.xml

    svn3727
Manually editing config.xml fixed the problem.

Backslash works fine for me in the Win32 version.

Autosaves can be disabled or made less frequent in the options.
