May be unrelated but never got the game to run by hitting single player from when I first tried with rc5/rc6(dont remeber) to 3.8 after uninstalling and reinstalling until I deleted the stock Freeorion settings folder. Although the error I always got was something about the network thread being terminated.

Sigh forgot to mention settings folder being the \Documents and Setting\(username)\application data\Freeorion folder.

I have nothing to go on to fix this one. Any more info that you can think of that might help would be appreciated. Also, why did you change the resolution to "Won't fix"? Is this bug still valid?

I am having exact same problem:

Report from the Event Viewer States =>
    Event 1000, Application Error:

Faulting application freeoriond.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x47bcfae6, faulting module MXVCR80.dll, version 8.0.50727.762, time stamp 0x45712238, exception code 0x40000015, fault offset 0x000046b4, process id 0x1298, application start time 0x01c895ffaad47ab0.

NOTE: current version of MSVCR80.DLL installed in Freeorion folder => 8.0.50727.42

Not sure if this is source of problem, however, unable to test due to unavailability of version 8.0.50727.762 for download online. => (Can't find it.)

    ALSO:

I tried downloading newest (March 2008) DirectX 9.c, installing previous versions and then 3.8, installing, uninstalling, and repairing with NET 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5. The only consistency that I saw was that none of these attempts changed MSVCR80.DLL from 8.0.50727.42 to 8.0.50727.762 in the freeorion folder. (Address C:\Program Files\FreeOrion\msvcr80.dll)

    70, 255])
1207280909 DEBUG : Disabled FPS limit

    freeorion.exe initiates, main menu appears.
all options lead to next executable screen, however, after selecting a new game in either single player or multiplayer, game freezes with music playing throughout, error listed in previous post occurs with MSVCR80.DLL and initiates windows program error screen and then must be closed out manually.

specifically, in single player, after selecting galaxy properties and selecting OK, error 1000 occurs with the faulting module being MSVCR80.DLL
