Also, judging from the recent changes, the newly increased spam seems to be coming from a single person using several users that have been left without blocking in December 2008. I have now blocked several of these users. It is a good practice to block users who are spamming the wiki; only reverting their changes does not prevent their further spam.

Monitoring pages and blocking spammers and vandals is a usual practice at wikis, not to be avoided. If the wiki should be less editable and thus wiki-like, more of the pages can be protected, so that only admins can edit them.

Hello all,

spam is a bit of a problem, but it can be reverted by any editor who comes along, as has already happened, which can be seen from histories of the pages. The spam cannot do any serious harm as far as I can tell, as it can always be reverted. In the worst case, more pages can be protected apart from the main page.

There are advantages to using MediaWiki, including the familiarity of its markup because of the popularity of Wikimedia projects that use it such as Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikisource, and Wikibooks. That's how I see it, anyway.

Hi Dimitry,

thanks for this notice. I was not aware of the problem.
Regarding sf: I've already asked them whether or not it is possible to install its own extensions or local settings, and they responded that it is not possible at all. See
https://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?func=detail&aid=2315773&group_id=1&atid=200001
so, should I move the wiki nontheless?
