window contents will appear frozen for all of or parts of the window.
moving the window or re-sizing it tends to unfreeze things... the
program runs even if you can't tell... including mouse commands etc...
if you select another window and then click back to the freeglut app
you often get updates for a fragmented area that corresponds with
the various window layers... also holding a mouse button down in
the window and then hitting the edges of the screen often unfreezes..
problem is intermittant and occurs both with 2.4 and 2.8 freeglut
in fullscreen, in a window and gamemode... though symptoms vary..
problem gets worse when using stereo3D at 120Hz...
my GL code is messy at the moment.. but if you want to play
install instructions for setting up dev:
the app is currenlty compiled with 2.4 but you can re-compile with 2.8,
for some reason the 2.4 compiled app will not run on 2.8 (very unfortunate)

MAke a small demo program / example (just drwaing a square or
something) containing only the relevant parts of your code. Then you
can easily test what might be wrong.
That said, why not calling glutPostRedisplay? Should do that..
and npGlutFullScreenExit should simply contain glutLeaveFullScreen().
Version 2.4 doesn't contain that and doesn't have functionality to
leave full screen. 2.8.0 does.

Just get the 2.8.0 sources and compile with that. There have been a
bunch of fixes over the 3-4 years since 2.4 is out, might be relevant.
