#83 comspec errors if don't specific \ I/O file

I have an unusual error with FreeCOM. If I do not use the second slash entry in fdconfig.sys shell line as shown below (which causes a warning), I get %COMSPEC% errors, cannot find command.com, string #38 and have to reboot. Those errors occur if I re-run my autoexec.bat.

123?shell=command.com \ \ /e:16384 /P

My drive configuration is: floppy image boot via grub4dos -> a:\command.com and r:\command.com -> set compsect to r:\command.com (ramdisk).
How can I effectively tell FreeCOM to load in the same state as when I add the second \ above, but not issue a warning about "\" being an invalid I/O device?
