FreeDOS-32 release 0.0.5

FreeDOS-32 is a MultiBoot, modular, free operating system under development for i386, designed to be "a 32-bit DOS". The 0.0.5 alpha release is available for download, featuring improved support for applications, and a new ATA/ATAPI driver for native disk access (no more need for BIOS). The file system part has been rearranged for better modularity, and it is now using a new Unicode support library and NLS manager. Please report any problem found in this release, and please check if the problem was present in 0.0.4 too. In the next release we plan to include the following features currently under development: an ATAPI CD-ROM driver, an ISO 9660 file system driver (for CD-ROMs), an improved brand new FAT driver, a LEAN file system driver, and better support for applications.

LEAN, a new free file system

In the context of FreeDOS-32, an operating system under development to extend the DOS concepts to work in a native 32-bit environment, a new free file system has been developed.
It is LEAN (Lean yet Effective Allocation and Naming), a free, simple, portable personal file system that aims to become an alternative to the proprietary FAT file system for embedded tasks.
A first implementation of a LEAN FS driver, under GNU GPL, is available in the "leanfs" module of our CVS repository.
