When attacking to colony, I usually get "A defeated D, but was unable to capture the colony" for a few times before they give up. A is attacking unit, D is some unarmed defender.

I'm not really sure what's happening, but I guess this is because D took some auto-muskets from colony stock, lost them but some muskets were left.

The problem is that the dialog really doesn't tell what's happening and this doesn't seem to be documented either. I first thought that there's some reason that artillery cannot be used to capture the colony.

Maybe the "couldn't capture the colony" could just be left off? And if colonist really had the muskets in the battle, it really was a soldier..

Try attacking Isabella in attached savegame.

I guess this is because D took some auto-muskets from colony stock, lost them but some muskets were left.

Yes, this message is a sign that auto-muskets occurred. No muskets need be left though. You can only capture a colony if you defeat an unarmed defender, which is documented IIRC.

The problem is that the dialog really doesn't tell what's happening

I thought about this, and I think it is OK. You have no way of knowing what is going on inside the colony. All you can tell is that your troops made progress but there was still armed resistance.

Maybe the "couldn't capture the colony" could just be left off?

    Perhaps that would be better.

IMO dialog didn't tell that there was armed resistance. In that screenshot it actually just says that defending unit was just a master carpenter, and that's supposed to be unarmed by default.

So, how about "A defeated armed D at C." ?

Or if attacker isn't supposed to know what's going on in the colony, just use the usual "Spanish Soldier (unit) has been demoted to unarmed (unit) after losing a battle against A". Isn't that what's really happening from attackers point of view? From defenders point of view Paul Revere caused master carpenter to instantly become a soldier just before attack, but attacker doesn't need to know that?

    I second that suggestion.
