The End of Turn warning box occasionally gives me useful information (like reminding me of a ship that arrived in Europe this turn), but more often annoys me by popping up when I am actually finished. The biggest reason for this is when I want to wait for the next turn before doing something with a unit that has movement points left, such as a scout that has reached the beach, but needs to wait for the ship that will be ferrying him to the adjacent island.
There are currently two commands I can give when I want to move another unit instead of the current one:
- "Wait", hotkey "w", which leaves the unit state as a '-', and will eventually come back to the current unit after cycling through everything else that hasn't gotten orders yet this turn
- "Skip", hotkey [space], which changes the unit state to 'W', and will never return to this unit unless I select it manually, but which is cleared at the end of turn
For the example scout, if the ship will arrive this turn, I use Wait, move the ship over, select the scout, move it on board, and send the ship on if it has remaining moves. If the ship will not arrive this turn, I use Skip, but the scout still shows up on the end-of-turn warning. I also use Skip to deal with scouts that will move into Mountains or Rainforest next, but don't have the moves left, a wagon train in a colony adjacent to an Indian village that has traded this turn, so needs to wait until next turn to trade more, and a couple of other cases.
I would suggest either making more of a difference between "Wait" and "Skip" by having "Skip" also Zero the unit's movement points, or allowing the End-of-Turn warning box to ignore units with state 'W'. If some people use "Skip" where I would use "Wait", it might be best to set up the End-of-Turn behavior as a user preference, but I think there should be some way for me to tell the game that I am done with a unit for this turn only, even though it could do more.
