I don't know if I will made a whole set, but if you want I can share all blender files I will make. I will first finish the vet, right now I don't know how to link the bones generated trough makehuman (used by the body mesh) to my clothes.

Please share the blender models! And I'll share mine :)
It is crucial to improve the project, the main advantage of 3D technology is that other artists will be able to use and build upon our models.
I' have discovered that for units pixel art. is the most effetive, sometimes I model some complex configurations like horsemen in mid-run but then I always finish the unit in pixel art. Also its worth adding textures to buildings.
I don't like a lot mixing pixel art and rendered picture, the result never looks so good.
I want to make a full graphics set. I will release it as mod or give it to freecol. 3d rendered stuffs can help to make animated sprite a lot easier, or orienting units according to their movement. Today I made high sea terrain, it's easy to create several pictures to make an animated ocean :
Great! With my seashores it'll give the whole game a professional grade looks. See I'm good with drawing and graphics computer-wise not so great. I never found an easy way to make realistic animated ocean to 64X128 iso pics. Could You also animate shores? :)
For my set I would just make the pcs brighter, I'm so glad I can modify those pics.
as for units If You made them in 3D .blends I could start modyfying them; but for now I've made around 200 new units focusing on quality as well as diversity in order to give modders material to work with so the game receives more mods, more features and so it can become more popular. stuff like animation for me personally is a luxury for later, for now I'm struggling to give it a nation - sensitive units and natives and colonies.. and everything pretty much for the next Big relase!
Sure 3D technology has it's vast advantages. It would be perfect if We could make like one rig and animation for a colonist with rifle for example and then autmatize it so that all similar units ,all soldiers, veteran soldiers, continentals seen from all possible and impossible angles etc are animated! THAT would allow us to have the best of both worlds We could make all that in 3D and mke a big step forward for the project, which I'm sure will end up in all-3D one day, the only question is in how many decades :)
BTW nicoo, would You like o receive my unit and other graphics? I'm not kidding about being an artist and if You like fairline's units, I'm sure You'll like mine. But its some 50 or 60 megabytes in total. :)
first I hope I didn't write something who let you thought I was underestimate your skills.

animate shores is possible, and I planned to do that, though I'm not sure how to get the best result because I never did something like that. Actualy I would like to make all waters, rivers, lake too. For animating shores, I know how it's done in some 3D games (I'm a 3D programmer, not professional, but I'm writing a 3D game engine)
For my set I would just make the pcs brighter, I'm so glad I can modify those pics.
I'm not sure about what pictures you'r talking. If you want to change mine, it's easy to do so by yourself if you have some know of blender. Otherwise I can do it for you. Won't take more than few mins.

(of course) I can share my blends. The only thing I want to do before uploading them on internet is to have a full and correctly rigged colonist. Right now is far to be perfect. I'm not a specialist of animation, rigging and stuffs like that, so it's something I need to learn by watching a lot of tuto and talking with people on forum so on... I'm not in very good mood these days, so I will wait to feel better before spending times on it.

3D has advantages, yes... but even if I know a lot about 3D programming, I'm not thinking it's the best for strategy game like civ or col. Actualy I prefer 2D, I have no doubt that you know better than I, how pixel art can be gorgeous. moreover to get something nice and playable in 3D, it requires a lot of skills (not only artistic skills), so I prefer a nice 2D game than making a game in 3D and getting something shitty... And I don't talk about the hardware requirement. Honestly I would not suggesting to go with 3D especially in java...

honestly I'm curious to see them. do you have a repo for your graphics ? I will upload my stuffs on my git next week, so people will be able to have an access.
now I planned to work on making terrain, very next days I will make hill, mountain and plain.
Animation of all waters - Great idea! It's the only way to make it look good. It'll not take much I can make the frames for shores, but first Let's ensure they look good without animation. I wanted to remake all rivers even with animations but I couldn't get past problems such as that water must always flow towards the sea;- and that's relative since the sea on the map can be either direction! And somebody has to write the script, anywys freecol aFAIK doesn't support any terrain animation yet. Unfortunately :)

Correct.
Let's ensure they look good without animation.
That is the right approach. All animations must be optional anyway. Even the existing simple event driven animations we have are frequently disabled because they are too slow on the user's machines, or just annoying to them. A continuous animation would probably be disabled even more frequently. Improving the static images should happen first.

Please start a new thread and gives us info about your machine.
easiest way to get some usable info about your machine is to start freecol and quit immediately.
then locate Freecol.log file and post it's content.

From grasslands i like grassland3-shorthai.png. Nice texturing. But the most important thing is that the tile be seamless :) grassland3-elevation.png could be good for hills BTW we could use hills and mountains for each terrain, idelly hills and mountains for each terrain as well as connection sensitive :>

you should not conseding them as finished.
I know how to make each of them seamless properly in blender.
Actualy grassland3-elevation is one I very like, because the term grassland doesn't means something flat. Pairie means something flat mostly covered of grass. Plain means something flat, with some grass or with no grass at all... I think sid meyer's devs were not very well-advised to use these terms in the way they did...
I want to make hill and mountain for different climate, and also with forest. But this is not for the first set. My first set should be usuable without any xml modification.
anyway here a screenshot from the editor. I didn't found yet how to properly set the borders but things look promising. Also the center is grassland4-drag0dot5.png "seamlessed" and properly cut like the water.
Some nice work here. I want to encourage you to continue to produce multiple different versions of the same terrain tile type. FreeCol can not support this yet, but the idea was discussed on the developer list a while back with the expectation it would be done some day. Seeing some progress towards a nice set of alternate terrain tiles certainly encourages me to look into it soon.

do native villagers have paint?
We would need an actual expert on native American culture to settle that, but I would guess their colouring options were limited.
actualy, nothing is finished. I'm not an expert on native culture. I would like to get something like :

water wave are easy to animate. Actualy I just wanted to show you it's easy to made animate water, moreover col1 has water animated :D.
you mean usually ;- but you right this is something that must be taken into account.

update :
first wip : shows savannah, plains, prairie and grassland. there is some little artefacts.
suggestion to freecol : renaming "savannah" to "pampa", because "savannah" should be more like scrub forest for me.
second wip is a quick test of my very first coast (lot of work to do here). The h-sea doesn't fit well because I was in hurry...
third wip : marsh
n.b. it seems that swamps should have some trees, I shall add some dead trees to make a swamp, I shall made some trees model first
fourth wip : tundra
fith wip : first hill (I don't like it a lot)
first I want to have one for each tile to have an overall view and how everything looks together. making multiple versions won't be a problem.
n.b. you can have noticed some black dots on the pictures, this is due to my rendering setting in blender with cycles engine.
