I followed your steps, but I needed another intermediate upgrade in order to keep my data without trouble with table upgrades:
0.5.4 -> 0.6.3 -> 1.0 -> 1.4 -> 1.6 -> 1.9.2
It looks like 1.4 -> 1.6 is too big a step.

By the way, it is not that easy to find Piwik older releases. For information, they are located at //builds.piwik.org
