Hi,

I am new to fonts and TTX but I would like to report that a popular font, "Apple Color Emoji," which is included in TTF format on iOS and Mac, does not survive the translation to TTX and back. After ttx'ing the TTF file to generate the TTX file, then ttx'ing the TTX file to get back to a TTF file, all of the bitmap glyphs are gone (in fact, all glyphs beyond the numbers 0-9 are gone).

Eyeballing the TTX file, it seems like the bitmap data is in there, but nonetheless the font cannot be converted to TTX and then back to TTF.

This bug is probably fixed in the Google fork of fonttools, please try that.

    • Hi Paul,

I downloaded the build from github & tried it, but it has the same issue. I would like to attach the Apple Color Emoji TTF font to this email, but it’s too big to send through my SMTP server. Still, perhaps you can find this TTF file on a Mac and tell me what I am doing wrong.

I run ttx on the TTF file.

I then edit the resulting ttx file, changing every occurrence of “Emoji” to “Imoji” and every occurrence of “emoji” to “imoji”. I do this so that when I install the font that I am about to re-generate from the ttx file, its name (Imoji/imoji) won’t conflict with the already-installed original font (Emoji/emoji).

Now I run ttx again to convert the (slightly modified) ttx file back into ttf format, creating a new .ttf file. But when I install the newly created .ttd file, none of the bitmap glyphs are present (in fact, only the glyphs for numerals 0-9 seem to have survived the translation).

      Any ideas?

Please report the bug to the issue tracker on the Google fork of fonttools, there are approximately zero people working on this version of fonttools.
