welp the first "mostly complete" component of FNORD is the Sound engine. the manager class, and full support of basic 3d sound and music exists now. There are still things I would like to add, but they are more nicities than the basic requirements of functional game sound. I want to add Ogg support and streaming to the OpenAL portion, but since wav is already supported, this is just to make it friendlier. also it still perhaps needs some cleanup or documentation, but the basic guts of it is all there and working. ... read more
Well irrlicht is a great gfx engine, aurdiere is a great sound engine, and so forth but it takes more than that for a full featured game. In the course of working on FMORG I have seen the need to first have a full "game engine" as opposed to simple the components of one before you can start to make a real game with it. By integrating together many open source components like Irrlicht(gfx), Audiere(sound), tinyXML(XML), RakNet(Networking), FEAR(AI), OpenSteer(AI), Pthreads(threading), CaLua/tolua++(scripting), Newton/Tokamak/ODE(physics).
I have been working on integrating these fine components together for the past few weeks, and building a cohesive game framework on top of them. Right now it's just called "engine", but at some point I will come up with a name for it. It will be an Entity-oriented, event-driven engine. Once I have something worth posting I will put up some source(right now its just a bunch of includes to tie everything together). Keep checking the FMORG website for the latest news.
