I think we are getting close to where we wanted to be for the Fire 1.0 release. I know that most of the big projects have been tackled and finished. (with a few exceptions like tab windows and preferences reorg) So I was going through my notes of what we wanted to have in Fire 1.0 that still has not been completed. Here is a list of those outstanding items, and the name of the responsible party. I have started putting the status in those cases where I know it.... (with a few misc ones added at the end) So, can everyone with their name on this list (including that elusive "nobody") reply to this with updated status about whether you will be able to do those items for the 1.0 release. I would recommend that we try and wind down development of new features in Fire 1.0 so that we can concentrate on polish and bug fixes and get this thing UI complete soon so that we can begin the localization phase. In the back of my head, I am thinking end of June for UI complete, and end of July for translation complete. Then a 2 week beta period, followed by a release mid-August. What do the rest of you think? Do we bring in the schedule so we release earlier? If you get back to me with the status on the items above, I will update the RFE tracker to reflect who is doing each item (if there are changes) and move things into the right category (Future Release vs Fire 1.0). I will also change the priority to High for all of the 1.0 stuff so that they will be easy to distinguish on your sf home page. Thanks, Alan |

Stuff assigned to me: Multiple buddy lists: I have most of the core done, doing the UI now. Have to do extensive testing. Direct Connect for AIM: Truthfully, this is only really missing a good way to do it in the UI, after that is done, direct connect is simple. Better Buddy Icon Support: Once again, only lacking in the UI. We can send buddy icons now, but you have to put them in that dir T ab Style Chat windows like adium: Well, my idea is not like adium, but I would say this would have to be defered until after 1.0 since I will not have the time. OK, Eric Lee and I sort of dropped the ball on this one, so I figure I'll explain where we are. A few weeks ago, we sent a list of some minor adjustments to the prefs to streamline a bit. Didn't really hear any feedback besides Jason saying that he envisioned something larger. We realized that something larger was probably a better move but we still didn't know a lot about how everything fits together in Fire. Instead of asking, we sort of kept quiet and sat on it. So that's where it stands. We'd still like to help, but we just don't have the wherewithal to implement all the changes that would be necessary and to add all the preference feature requests which have also been assigned to me (kft). While we have always been interested, the idea of a prefs reorg got a whole lot bigger once we realized what it would entail. I guess we got a bit overwhelmed. Sorry for not speaking up sooner. Ken |

Sorry, I won't be able to make it. My Saturday afternoon is shot. (Rehearsal for West Side Story all afternoon, and a performance of Big River that evening....) Man, my acting hobby is getting in the way of my programming hobby! Good thing I don't have a job getting in the way of my hobbies too! Can someone email me their log file of the chat after it is done (using a TOT version of Fire so I get font/color/smiley of course) I believe this was originally going to cover the preferences re-organization for 1.0... So I will give you all my input up front. 1) We need to re-order into logical groupings. On the order of: Messages Alerts / Notifications Buddies Accounts Appearance Security Startup Logging ... 2) I believe that each pane should be a single sheet of preferences. No more of this subwindow popped up within a tab within a pane. ( I guess what I am saying is that I would prefer to get rid of tabs within individual preference panes, and instead go for more and larger panes - that still work on an 800x600 screen) 3) Lets create a consistent callback mechanism used by all the panes - either a single callback with a select based upon the data, or a different callback for each preference item... I don't care either way, but the mixed bag of programming styles makes it interesting to add and debug items in the preference panes. 4) We should take a serious look at the preferences and determine whether some of them can now go away. Some things may be obsoleted by other changes to the UI, and still others might be able to be removed by simply saving the last state of that feature and starting up in that state when beginning again. (Console Window Visibility for example) 5) We should revisit the default value for each preference to give the novice user the best experience possible. When in doubt, think, "What would my Grandmother want this preference setting to be..." 6) Don't forget the new preferences we have talked about (Idle time slider bar 1 minute - up to infinity [never]) I hope this helps! ( I >guess what I am saying is that I would prefer to get rid of tabs >within individual preference panes, and instead go for more and >larger panes - that still work on an 800x600 screen) I don't have a problem with tab-pane grouping of preferences within a single preference pane, so long as the tab grouping is used to separate logical sub-groupings. This metaphor is one that is reasonably common in the OS X world, for better or for worse, and so I don't think its going to generate significant confusion if we continue to do so. One other thing we should do is clean up the menus somewhat. There was some discussion on this before, but I believe we need changes to the File and Window menus, and we should add a Status menu to make that more discoverable. I'm not sure if there's an RFE on this or not. I'll add it if not. -Jason |

Greetings all, I plead guilty that I haven't looked at the online feature request list for this, but in the interest of quickly adding one tiny little thing to the pot... When I run Fire it always opens the Accounts window. It remembers the size and position correctly for all my windows (at least I haven't noticed any that don't) and even remembers _if_ I had my Buddies window open. But it does not seem to remember that I closed my Accounts window. My usage pattern is that I rarely need that window open and it's annoying to have to close it every time I run the app. If it remembers the size and position shouldn't it also remember the open/closed state? Just a little nit... Ciao!' Mike |

For some reason I thought Jason had removed the synchronize] call from TOT, but that does not appear to be the case. So I guess my hack isn't working either. I'm quite confused about this whole thing. -- Nick Kocharhook -- <avpx@xbpuneubbx.pbz> -- Rot-13 |

Well, errrr, .... There I go running my mouth (keyboard?) again! I am on TOT but I haven't updated for probably 2 weeks or so. If this is supposed to have been fixed then just ignore me until next week when I'm at work (where all my files are) and I'll update and try it again. Thanks, Mike > For some reason I thought Jason had removed the synchronize] call from > TOT, but that does not appear to be the case. > > So I guess my hack isn't working either. Well, prior to about a week ago, there was a preference to open the Accounts window on startup. I just recently replaced it with something that keeps track of when you open/close the window, and restores the state when you start Fire again. So yeah, give the new code a try and let me know if it works for you. -- Nick Kocharhook -- <avpx@xbpuneubbx.pbz> -- Rot-13 |
