So my brother on a Windows machine using MSN Messenger cannot see that
I am online on my Mac using Fire. Is this related to the MSN network
issues? BTW, I have no problem connecting to MSN, and I can message
him with no problems.

This probably has to do with the buddy list permissions in MSN.
Basically, when someone adds you to their buddy list, the MSN servers
send you a message (the next time you are logged on) asking if it is OK
for that person to add you as a buddy. If you say no, you are removed
from their list, and if you say yes, you stay.
Until you say "yes" it's OK, the MSN servers will not show you as
online in their buddy list (to protect your privacy)
The current release of Fire does not display that message and allow you
to say yes or no, so you will always show up as offline to people who
add you to their lists.
In the short term, you will need to connect using an official MSN
client, and answer the question. In the long term, this is something
we hope to add to Fire itself.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
