Alexander: Your suggestion to remove 'localhost' and set DISPLAY to :0.0 did the trick. All is well again. The solution raises questions. First, I am certain that, before changing window managers, setting DISPLAY to localhost:0.0 worked fine, even when using Apple's X11.app. So what did changing window managers trigger?
