DuraSpace Launches “Hot Topics: The DuraSpace Community Webinar Series”
A forum for community experts to share their knowledge

Institutions, businesses and governments at every level are grappling with digital information that multiplies at an ever-increasing rate of speed. To help communities find solutions to manage, preserve and take advantage of burgeoning data, DuraSpace is presenting a new series of web seminars on topics of particular interest to digital preservation and access communities. “Hot Topics: The DuraSpace Community Webinar Series” provides a forum and an audience for community experts to share their knowledge with a global community of participants throughout 2012.

Series one: Knowledge Futures: Digital Preservation Planning

Hot Topics begins in February of 2012 with the first series: “Knowledge Futures: Digital Preservation Planning”. This series is curated by Liz Bishoff, partner at The Bishoff Group LLC. Three web seminars will focus on processes and best practices for preservation planning.

Liz Bishoff and Tom Clareson, Director for New Initiatives, LYRASIS, will present the first web seminar entitled “Assessing Preservation Readiness,” on February 7. She explains,  “Planning for preservation of digital collections using a collection assessment framework is crucial to being achieving institutional success. We will review best practices and tools for achieving a good plan during this web seminar."

The second webinar, “Preservation Planning Success Stories” will feature a discussion of how planning can facilitate implementation of a digital preservation program. On February 21, Kristy Dixon, University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Kate Boyd, University of South Carolina and a representative from the Orbis Cascade Alliance will share their experiences in developing a digital preservation plan and next steps toward implementation.

The third webinar will be help on March 27, “Preservation and Archiving Highlights from the Alliance Digital Repository”, will feature Robin Dean, Director of the Alliance Digital Repository.  Robin will provide a case study of how the ADR collaborative comprised of Colorado Alliance Research Libraries migrated their digital collections from Fedora to Islandora.  Robin will include a discussion of the how the ADR Preservation Plan guided their decisions during this migration.

A wide range of topics related to the themes of digital preservation, curation, access, and associated technologies will be presented throughout 2012. This series of web seminars is intended to serve the needs of librarians, repository managers, researchers, technologists, and others involved in preservation activities.  Topics may include but are not limited to:

• Data management
• Collaborative research
• Preservation and archiving
• Services integration
• Community engagement
• Cloud solutions

Each DuraSpace web seminar series is focused on a theme, curated by a leader in the community, and features speakers invited by the curator to offer one-hour presentations based on an aspect of that theme.  Presentations are approximately forty minutes long and are followed by questions from the online audience. The one-hour web seminar format is a useful vehicle for:

• Sharing research results
• Demonstrating prototypes
• Reviewing best practices
• Engaging your community
• Soliciting feedback and discussion
• Collaborating with developers and managers on initiatives
• Offering professional development training
• Conducting project updates
• Hosting mini-technical summits
