Still concerning the ext3 partition on my CompactFlash cards: I often get messages from the GNU ls command about corrupt directories. Usually, the contents are listed correctly (though other commands like gnutar will refuse to process such directories). Often, however, I end up getting each file twice in the listing.
Is there an explanation for this??

I'd suggest you run fsck. Dupe files usually indicate a corrupt directory.
