Now I installed and started the stable existdb 2.1 with two different jre:

30 Jul 2013 21:32:10,016 [main] INFO  (JettyStart.java [run]:119) - Running
with Java 1.6.0_27 [Sun Microsystems Inc. (OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM) in
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre]

and

with Java 1.7.0_10 [Oracle Corporation (Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM)
in /usr/local/oracle_java/jdk1.7.0_10/jre]

both returned the same afore mentioned error messages during the start.

and these are the common remaining specifics on my machine:

Moreover, there is no global CLASSPATH variable set on my system.
