Oh, and further down: 

xdmp:apply($analyzeString, $date, $regex, "i") 

would translate to

$analyzeString($date, $regex, "i")

But for this to work, you'll need the version of analyze-string taking 3 parameters, so you probably have to change the function-lookup accordingly.
