I implemented (and just checked in) a new ant build target "backrest", which will build a self-contained, simple, standalone distribution of only what is needed to run a remote backup/restore from the command line. I elected to call the backup class directly, since the start class is pretty ugly and really is intended for dynamic startup of embedded eXist instances, not running a simple backup or restore task. This target creates a zip file that can be copied to remote servers, unzipped, and then used to perform command-line restores (and backups) locally on the server.
