yeah, well basically exist is tested by the developers using SUN java
1.4 5.0 and 6.0; For eXist it does not really matter which java
version is used, although I think we are happy in dropping 1.4 support
after the upcoming release 1.2 (currently developed as 1.1.2dev)
In general terms; Java6 is reported to be significantly faster
compared to older revisions, but I guess there is a trade-off
regarding disk usage (java6 is larger then java5 due e.g. the embedded
SQL server). Not sure what has changed regarding memory usage since
this is a important subject for sun.
Further more Java6 has better i18n support but this can be added to
java 5 with icu-jars (http://www.icu-project.org/).
I would say that Java6 is probably a better choice although exist is
not developed specifically for that version. exist currently still
runs on Java1.4.....

We have found Java 1.6 to be the fastest for eXist.
We have also found that the OS and Hardware makes a massive difference, =
for our application after significant performance testing we found that =
Java 1.6 on Solaris 10 on AMD Opteron left everything else in the dust*
I did find that the IBM 1.5 JDK was significantly faster than the Sun =
1.5 JDK - but for us this was not an option due to support etc etc.
