There are (too) many pointers to connect a read/write database to excel, effectively using excel as a front end to some documents in a database.

There are some plug-ins for connecting to non microsoft databases, see

Oracle:

Of course this is for SQL only, but there are solutions for the sharepoint server based on a REST API.
