I think it would be good to have a feature to crop an existing map. If you only need a smaller region for simulation, there could be a rectangle tool that selects the region and some edit boxes to enter alternatively the coordinates of the bounding rectangle. Right now there is this perl script (planetosm-excerpt-area.pl) that can do it.

But this feature only make real sense if the import of large file will be improved.

    Ahh, one thing I've just thought about. The above perl script does not really crop the map. AFAIK edges that starts within the cropping rect will be included in the resulting net no matter if this edge maybe ends outside of the rect. So, IMHO it would be even better, to crop these edges too by inserting a new node that lies on the border of the cropping rect.
