It would be nice if it was possible to create degraded
RAID4/5 arrays using EVMS. It would certainly be
possible (mdadm lets you do this), and I gather the
reason not to allow this has been deliberate (since
degraded arrays offer no redundancy).

However being able to initially create degraded arrays
allows for more flexibility when creating new arrays or
rearranging disks. The current workaround of using
mdadm to create the array and then EVMS to manage it
from then on has a tendancy to run into several
problems (see this thread in the EVMS mailing lists:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?t=113201332100001&r=1&w=2\).

The suggestion of allowing this, but with suitable
warnings seems reasonable?

Creating degraded RAID-1 and RAID-4/5 regions should now be
possible in the EVMS 2.5.5 release. Please give it a try and
send an email to the evms-devel mailing list if you
    encounter any problems.

Thanks for that. I used this on EVMS 2.5.4 with the extra
patch which came out just after release. Works just fine.
