It would be nice to run esniper in the background
instead of giving it a console.

    Already done. esniper ignores SIGHUP, so you can just
    background it and it will continue to run whn you log off.
    There are a few scripts that I know of (including one I
    wrote, thanks to the inspiration of another esniper user)
    that will manage esniper. The script I use is at
    <http://esniper.sf.net/esnipe>.

    I should provide links to esniper scripts on the esniper
    home page. I'll do that sometime, but first priority is to
    esniper working with https!

    You can take a look at screen
    (http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/), that works very good
    for me.
    You can then let it sit in a virtual console screen, that
    you can detach (inside screen using CTRL+A+D) and reattach
    (screen -r).
