I traced my problem to importing the random module (python standard module).
Just by commenting out the "import random" line epydoc3 now runs trough the
class i previously had problems with.

This has been fixed in subversion. (Though I'm not sure
why importing the random module would have elicited it --
it should just occur if you're using @group's and one of
    them is empty.)
