#21 Backgrounds other than white broken

If you assign the background color to black, for example,
(set-face-background 'default "black")
and turn on font-lock-mode,
all the colored text appears with a white background.

I tried setting all the types to have a black
background, but this still didn't work.

    Background for 'default' face is set, but not propagated to inheriting faces,
    unlike on emacs-21. Will fix. A work-around for now is to set the
    background for the frame rather than the default face -- e.g.:

    M-x set-background-color black

    or

    (modify-frame-parameters (car (frame-list))
    (list '(background-color . "black")))

    Actually, this is not a bug. The desired behavior relies on a mechanism for
    face inheritance added in emacs-21. Will not fix (until porting to 21/22
    begins), but the work-around of setting background color for the frame
    works in cases where it is desired to change the frame background.
