Dear eLML Newsletter subscribers, I am happy to announce a new eLML 8 version today! The big new thing is that eLML offers now a mobile view of your lesson based on jQuery Mobile. Using the already existing eBook converter (based on ePub) and the new mobile view, you can now serve your clients with lessons optimized for both tablets like iPads and also Smartphones like iPhones or Android devices! To see the mobile version in action point your iPhone or Android phone to http://www.elml.org/website/en/ and you are automatically redirected to the mobile view! You can also use the mobile view link in the footer of the eLML website with any desktop browser. Whats new in the eLML 8 release? 1.The Mobile View (based on jQuery Mobile): http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_mobile.html 2. New versions of firedocs and EasyELML available! http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/unit_tools.html (see comment below) 3. Many bugfixes, improvements and updates. Too much to list them all here :-) Comments about eLML tools: - EasyELML: The author Michael Ziege has released a new version a month ago and it should run stable on Windows and Mac OSX now. - The latest firedocs 1.8 version runs on any Firefox above version 4. Be aware that on Firefox 10 (due to a caching problem) the eLML editor firedocs crashes at first. What you have to do is following: 1. Enter "about:config" in your address bar and continue after the warning. 2. In the configuration parameter list do a right click and choose "New... Boolean" to create a new parameter. 3. Now enter "nglayout.debug.disable_xul_cache" as parameter name and set it to "true". After that restart Firefox and it should work again. Sorry about that complicated bugfix... - Template Builder: Thomas Linowsky, the author of the Template Builder, has told me that he is working on a totally new release and will have a prototype running soon. He'll certainly announce the beta release via the eLML-Users list. - Lenya CMS AddOn development has been terminated because the Lenya CMS project is not active anymore :-( So much from me. After nearly 10 years this will be my last mail as eLML project leader (see my last posting). From now on Immo Wille and Alberto Sanz are running the show here at the University of Zurich :-) Have fun with eLML! Dear eLML-Users After ten years I am leaving the University of Zurich and switching back to my original field of study Environmental Sciences and Climatology. I will be working for the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology starting on March 1st. Being one of the founders of the eLML project (together with Susanne Bleisch, FHNW, and other colleagues from the GITTA project, see http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/unit_about.html) I very much hope that the project will continue to live on and prosper :-) At the University of Zurich we have Immo Wille as new eLML project coordinator. Alberto Sanz will continue to answer the support address el...@id... together with Immo Wille. Responsible for strategic decisions is the new head of OLAT: Alan Moran. He will contact the eLML community soon with some comments of his own and probably also organize an eLML users meeting at the University of Zurich (at least for those of you involved in an UZH-project). Of course eLML is an open source project and lives also outside the University of Zurich. For a list of past or current project members check the eLML website (http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/website_contact.html) or the Sourceforge project members page (http://sourceforge.net/project/memberlist.php?group_id=123157). I still have some new eLML features developed (e.g. mobile view) that haven't been published yet and plan to do another major eLML release in February. Check out my XING-, LinkedIn- and Twitter-Links below if you want to keep in touch! I'll also have a small farewell party on February 8th in a Bar in Zurich! Contact me if you are from Zurich and would like to attend! Dear eLML-News-Subscribers After one year in sunny and warm California today is my first day back in (rainy and cold) Zurich at the University of Zurich. So welcome back to you all and dont be surprised if instead of one mail every two or three months you will now suddenly get one mail per month :-) But the eLML-News list remains a very low volume list. As you might know the eLML project has an unmoderated mailing list for eLML users where active eLML users and developers can exchange ideas, discuss problems or present new developments. In the last weeks there were two new tools presented on the eLML-Users list that seem very interesting and promising. Therefore I forward those two mails to the eLML-News list. The tools are: 1. "Easy eLML" developed by Michael Ziege (University of Zurich, Switzerland) 2. "eLML Plugin for Open Office" by Sandor Polak/Andreas Wittke (University of applied science Lübeck, Germany) The Easy eLML tool will help the non-advanced user to work with eLML because it eliminates the need for a special XML editor to do transformations etc. With Easy eLML you should basically be able to download the tool, double click it to open it, import a lesson, edit a lesson with the integrated Firedocs eLML editor and then export the lesson again to the format of your choice. Check out Michael Ziege's email below with his explanations and the link he provides. The eLML Open Office Plugin is a continuation of the Plugin originally developed as a thesis at our University of Zurich. Sandor Polak, a computer science student at the university of applied science in Lübeck continued - maybe "rebuilt" is the better term - the development of the open office plugin and will present his Alpha version at the Campus Innovation conference in Hamburg on November 18th, 2010. Dont miss this presentation if you plan to attend the Campus Innovation conference! I attach below the email of Andreas Wittke (Sandors tutor) where he explains the project, provides the important links and also asks the community to contact them if you work with Open Office and are interested in becoming a tester or giving input. I hope you find these projects as interesting as I did when I read the mails. Feel free to contact the authors directly if you have further questions, input, suggestions etc. I think its just fair to say that since they both develop for the community they are also interested in getting feedback, suggestions or comments from the community, thats what open source is all about, right? Dear eLML-User, After one year of hard work, the eLML team is proud to present the new eLML 6 version! Here are the highlights: 1. Create eBooks directly from your lessons (for iPad etc.) 2. Create newer XHTML 1.1 Strict code 3. New and faster Firedocs 1.3 eLML Editor 4. New feature for referencing and highlighting content 5. Now supporting latest YAML 3.2 release 6. SCORM-transformation reworked and vastly improved And to make it even easier for you we have released eLML now under the more liberal Apache 2 License (not GPL anymore)! ------------------------------------------------ Let me just briefly outline the new features. 1. eBooks: With eLML you can now create the popular ePub-format for eBooks. This means you can view your lesson on your iPad or iPhone or any other popular eBook-reader. For more information check: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_epub.html You can also download entire ELML website as an eBook (the link is in the footer of each page) and view it with your favorite eBook-Reader. This is the first release of the ePub-format converter for eLML and we will continue developing improvements of this converter. So please send us comments and feedback. 2. XHTML 1.1 Strict: The ePub-standard is based on XHTML 1.1 Strict HTML code. Since eLML in the past was working with the more flexible XHTML 1.0 Transiational standard, we had to create a new converter for XHTML 1.1 Strict. So now you can choose if you want to create XHTML 1.0 Transitional or 1.1 Strict code in eLML. We took the advantage of including a lot of code improvements into this rebuild. To read more about this, point your browser to: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_xhtml.html 3. Firedocs 1.3 eLML Editor: The faster and improved Firedocs 1.3 eLML Editor has already been released but we now officially included it into the eLML 6 download package. Check the older eLML news for more information about the new 1.3 series. 4. Referencing and highlighting parts of your lesson: With the new labelRef-attribute you can reference other parts of your lesson. A language course at our university uses this feature for highlighting verbs, nouns, adjectives etc. If the students e.g. hoovers over the word "noun" then the nound in the foreign language sentence visually stands out. Read more about the new labelRef-attribute here: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/manual_attributes.html 5. YAML 3.2 Support We are still very fond of the CSS framework YAML. The new eLML 6 release contains the latest updates and improvements to make eLML compatible with the YAML 3.2, the newest version currently out. Please note that we cannot include YAML into the eLML download package, so you have to download it yourself and included it into eLML. Check the readme.txt file that is included in the eLML package. http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_yaml.html 6. SCORM Updated: The eLML to SCORM converter has been totally rewritten and creates now SCORM 1.2 files that are compatible with all the major LMS. To read more about creating IMS or SCORM content packages or to download a demo package and test it with our LMS go to: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_cp.html Finally: Bugfixes, improvements, and updated manual During the last year many improvements and bugfixes have been included into the new eLML 6 release. If you are interested in details, please go to our Sourceforge project website and search the Bugtracker and Feature Tracker for more information. The JavaScripts for lightwindow, selfCheck and glossary terms have been improved, the print and other version were updated and last but not least the whole website and manual is now up-to-date containing all the information you need for working with eLML 6. Have fun! We love to hear from you and get feedback! Contact us at el...@id... Dear eLML-Users and Newsletter-Subscribers Today the open source license of the eLML (eLesson Markup Language) project changed from the restrictive GPL to the more open Apache 2 license. This means that in future you will be able to use eLML also for commercial products without the need to contribute back your developments based on the eLML project. For us it means that we can start working on integrations of eLML into our open source learning management system OLAT (www.olat.org), also released under the open source Apache 2 license. Nevertheless I would like to stress that we are still happy to hear from you, are interested to see how you are using eLML and what you are developing with it. So the switch to the more liberal Apache license does not mean that we are not interested in cooperations, on the contrary. As you already know we can also list your project on the success stories page if you are interested: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/about_success_stories.html Feel free to contact me for any further questions. I would like to use this opportunity to remind you that we have just released a completely rebuilt eLML Editor based on the the new Firedocs 1.3 version. This Firefox plugin is updated automatically if you have a previous version installed or you can download it from the following page: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/tools_editor.html Greetings from Los Angeles Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler University of Zurich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +1 (774) 2FISLER or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Dear eLML-Users and Newsletter-Subscribers, We are very happy to announce today a new release: eLML 5.1. This new release contains a full support for creating SCORM packages out of eLML, including time tracking , etc. You can check the "SCORM and IMS" page on the eLML website under "Output Formats" for some screenshots and more information about the implementation. Hand in hand with the continuing development of eLML we also optimize the Firedocs eLML Editor. Last week we released the Beta 6 version which contains all the new features and bugfixes of the eLML 5.1 release. Once installed in Firefox the editor add-on automatically notifies if new versions are available so you should be able to download this editor update directly from Firefoxes "Add-ons" menu. I'd like to mention that we have also been working on referencing and labels in the new release. One new feature is the possibility that one element can reference any other element in eLML using the new "labelRef" attribute. You are certainly familiar with setting labels for units, learningObjects but also for other elements like paragraph, multimedia , etc. Using the link-element you could then set a link to this item (by the way: you can now also link to certain labels in other lessons!). Using the labelRef attribute you are now able to reference another element which "connects" the two elements. You will still have to define in your project how the transformation should handle this "connection" (link? Create a separate box or table?). The default-transformation does not use this information at the moment but this might change in future releases. This new attribute is also available in the metadata (within the copyrightStatement element). So you can e.g. add a specific copyright statement for a certain image or movie used within your lesson. You will find a list of (nearly) all changes below. Please note that we are announcing this release 5.1 although you will find the release 5.11 on Sourceforge. We did publish a 5.1 release on Sourceforge about a month ago but never announced it. The SCORM implementation was not satisfying enough so we waited with our announcement until we had the release 5.11. Sorry for the confusion :-) You can find the download link for the new stable release and much more on the eLML website: http://www.elml.org For a full list of new features and bugfixes check: https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=928413 Have fun with the new release and thanks to the following people for building this new release: Susanne Bleisch, Alberto Sanz, Sandra Roth, Thomas Comiotto, Andreas Wittke & Oncampus Bye Joël Fisler -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler Universität Zürich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 (Y12 F64) CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Dear eLML-Newsletter subscribers, So it has been exactly half a year since our last newsletter which does not mean that nothing is happening at the eLML project, just our communication is a bit slow :-) eLML wins CATCON Gold Award in Beijing: ----------------------------------------------------------- Today eLML won the CATCON Gold Award in Beijing at the ISPRS Conference! We would like the CATCON organizers for this prize! You will find more information about this here within the next days: http://www.isprs2008-beijing.org http://www.igg.tu-berlin.de/1306 http://gallery.mac.com/fisler#100042 (A short 3 min. Movie) eLML is a Medida Prix Finalist: ------------------------------------------ eLML also is one of the finalists for the Medida Prix eLearning Award awarded at the GMW Conference in Austria on September 18th. Wish us luck and "drückt uns die Daumen" as we say in German! http://www.medidaprix.org/ Google Summer of Code: ------------------------------------ You might have heard that eLML is participating at this years Google Summer of Code (GSoC) and has been nominated as a mentoring organization. Currently two students are working on two different projects. Alberto Sanz is creating a transformation file to transform eLML lessons into the DocBook format. He is also (not part of GSoC) the person creating the Open Document Format (ODF) converter and we plan to release both sometimes in September 2008. GSoC: Template Builder Beta released: ------------------------------------------------------ The second project is Thomas Linowskys Template Generator. With his tool you can easily create eLML templates using a standard webbrowser. No XSLT-knowledge needed anymore! Please visit www.elml.ch and read the latest news entry on how to download and use the template generator. Please note that this is a beta release and that Thomas would appreciate your feedback if you downloaded and used his tool! Thanks a lot! The famous eLML editor...: ------------------------------------ So in the last newsletter we promised to release it at the OLAT conference in March 2008. The the release of the editor was postponed to July 2008. Then Firefox 3 came out and - since the editor is a Firefox plugin - many new problems arised. Another month of work plus holidays, missing documentation etc. You get the picture. But I can offer you (the newsletter subscribers) exclusively a preview version. Point your browser at: http://www.elml.ch/firedocs-elml.xpi to download the plugin. Then open Firefox and choose "Open" in the File menu. The Plugin will be installed. After a restart you will see a new menu to the right of the Google Search field. Choose "Open..." to open an existing eLML lesson and test the editor. You can send comments to el...@id... but you will have to wait for the first official (beta) release in September for documentation etc. Have fun! eLML stable version 5: ------------------------------- The current stable version 4 of eLML is outdated. We suggest that you use the "developer version" instead. We plan to have a new eLML 5 release this automn. The developer release already contains a lot of new stuff like better support for the editor, the template generator and for YAML, new tooltip and lightwindow script, optimized HTML-page for Google and other search engines (including the automatic generation of a sitemap.xml), ODF and DocBook generator and much more. So eLML is alive and running! But with all the stuff we do we simply lack the time to maintain and update the website regularly. Sorry about that. We do our best :-) Greetings from Beijing Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler Universität Zürich - Informatikdienste (ID) Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 (Y12 F64) CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Dear eLML-Newsletter subscribers, We have been talking about the release of the eLML editor (a WYSIWYG =20 frontend for eLML-lessons) for a long time now. Finally the time has =20 come to release it. We are currently beta-testing the software and =20 will release a first public version at the OLAT conference 2008 on =20 March 28th. OLAT is an open source learning management system (LMS) =20 originally also started here at the University of Zurich. Here's a =20 short overview about what's happening at the first international OLAT =20= conference: "The conference starts on Wednesday (March 26th, 2008) with pre-=20 conference "hands-on"-workshops on OLAT and eLML. The official =20 conference starts on Thursday (March 27th, 2008) with two sessions: =20 One session on OLAT use cases, online assessments and usability, the =20 parallel session - hosted by our partner "DOIT" - on "E-Learning in =20 Medicine". On Friday (March 28th, 2008) there will be a session for =20 users (use cases and content creation) and a second session for =20 developers on "Proprietary Development for OLAT". Dear eLML-Newsletter subscribers, The eLesson Markup Language is becoming more and more popular at the =20 University of Zurich and other Higher Education Institutions throught =20= Switzerland and the number of projects working with eLML is growing. =20 With growing popularity the amount of resources put into this XML =20 structure is also growing. Currently on the developer release there =20 are some new features available or under construction: - Latex transformation (an alternative for creating PDFs without =20 using XSL-FO) - Transform multiple lessons into one course with consistent =20 navigation and numbering - A new element to create self-check quizzes is under development - It will be able to add context information to certain elements to =20 offer in-depth knowledge or background information These new features are tested and discussed via the eLML-Users =20 mailing list and the according Feature Request Trackers on =20 Sourceforge. Please join us if you like to help testing and/or =20 implementing new eLML-features. For existing projects these changes =20 will have no influence since the XMLSchema will not contain any new =20 restrictions but only extensions. If you are happy with what eLML =20 offers in version 3.1 you will be able to stick with that without any =20= conflicts or compatibility issues. We plan to release the next eLML =20 stable version in an month or so. Also in late May (23rd of May 2007) a new eLML course at the =20 University of Zurich starts. The course is free and members of the =20 University of Zurich can subscribe to the course directly here: https://www.uzh.ch/cgi-bin/ssl-dir/kurse?semester=3DSS07 Please contact me if you like to participate but are not a member of =20 the University of Zurich. This should not be a problem. eLML will also be presented in a tutorial at the GMW 2007 conferences =20= in Hamburg, Germany. The hands-on tutorial takes place on Tuesday, =20 11th of September from 9am to 1pm. Further information plus =20 registration information can be found here: http://gmw07.de/Programm/tutorials_3.php#t3 One last thing: eLML was mentioned in one of the biggest Swiss daily =20 newspapers, the Neue Z=FCrcher Zeitung NZZ in an article about e-=20 Learning at the University of Zurich. You can download the article on =20= the eLML website: http://elml.ch/website/en/html/about_furtherReading.html Thank you for your interest in eLML. Dear eLML-Newsletter subscribers, We are happy to announce the latest eLML version 3.1 release. Since =20 there are some XMLSchema changes, we chose to use version 3.1 instead =20= of 3.0x. The eLML Schema now allows you to use: - Table headings anywhere in tables (rows) - Longer label names (up to 20 characters) On the other hand we prohibited some empty elements because they =20 could cause problems in the transformation: - Empty clarify/look/act elements are not allowed anymore - Empty URLs within the bibliography are also prohibited now Most probably these eLML Schema changes wont affect you but still it =20 is recommendable to download this latest eLML release and quickly =20 check your lesson files. The transformation XSLT files have also been updated. We introduced a =20= new way of using keys for general terms/titles like bibliography, =20 introduction, learning objectives etc. All these language specific =20 terms used within eLML are now stored in separate XML files. We do =20 provide a key term XML file for English, German, French and Italian =20 (checked by native speakers). You do have now the possibility to =20 change these keys for your project, if you like. Please refer to our =20 postings in the eLML-Users mailing list for more information or have =20 a look at the folder core/presentation/terms/ or within the elml/=20 _config/config.xml file. Further improvements within the XSLT files =20 are bugfixes regarding internal labels, SCORM transformation, =20 numbering problems in titles etc. The print/PDF transformation file was also update. We fixed bugs, =20 updated the layout and implemented some improvements like direct =20 links to flash animations from within the PDF document. Of course the =20= documentation, XMLSchema reference and eLML website were also changed =20= accordingly and updated. So much for the new eLML stable version 3.1. Further announcements =20 regarding the eLML WYSIWYG editor, Latex transformer etc. will follow =20= in the next weeks. If you are interested in participating at the eLML =20= project, please do subscribe to our eLML-Users Mailinglist or visit =20 our Sourceforge website. Currently we are discussing the creation of =20 a new context information element and comments/inputs are very =20 welcome. Dear eLML-News subscribers, We are happy to announce the first beta release of Andr=E9 Lochers =20 OpenOffice Plugin for eLML. With this Plugin you can with no prior =20 XML knowledge easily create new lessons within OpenOffice and export =20 them as valid eLML (XML) lesson file. Please note that this beta =20 release does not allow yet the import of existing eLML lessons. This =20 is due to the fact that some elements are not supported yet by the =20 editor. Have a look at the compliance list that is listed in the help =20= file available within the package. Up to now the editor has been tested on Windows XP and various Linux =20 flavors in OpenOffice 2 and on Mac OSX in NeoOffice 2. Andr=E9 Locher, =20= a computer science student who created this editor, would be happy to =20= receive further compatibility or performance feedback by other users. =20= Feel free to contact him at and...@id.... Please do read =20 the short help.pdf file (included in the package) carefully before =20 installing and using the editor. Have fun! About the German Wikipedia: The eLML entry has been deleted some days =20= ago. Although we had 14 votes for eLML and only 2 against it, the =20 admin decided that the project is irrelevant and deleted it. There is =20= yet another discussion going on about this deletion but I dont think =20 this will change anything. Dear eLML-Newsletter subscribers, I would like to keep you informed about eLML at lest every two =20 months. Here are the latest news from the eLesson Markup Language =20 (eLML) project: 1. eLML Update 3.02 2. Webfrontend 3. OpenOffice eLML Editor 4. eLML course 5. eLML@Wikipedia 1. eLML Update The latest eLML version 3.02 contains mainly bugfixes and =20 documentation updates. We did not implement any new features or =20 schema updates in this release. Have a look at the project website to =20= download the stable release or do a "cvs update" if you are using our =20= developer release. 2. Webfrontend for eLML As we already informed in the last newsletter, Thomas Comiotto =20 (University of Zurich) is working on a open source webfrontend for =20 eLML. The editor will work in Firefox only since it is based on a =20 WYSIWYG XML editor available for Firefox only. We hope to have a =20 first release before the end of the year. 3. OpenOffice eLML Editor Andre Locher, a computer science student from Zurich, has programmed =20 an open source eLML editor based on Open Office. With this editor =20 authors can work in a "Word-like" environment to write lessons, add =20 pictures and flash animations and export the relsult as a valid eLML =20 lesson. The editor is schema aware and thus always displays the =20 available elements according to the cursor position. He is still =20 fixing some last bugs and hopefully will release a beta version =20 within the next weeks. We will keep you informed. 4. eLML course Starting this friday Michael Ziege and myself are giving an eLML =20 Workshop at the University of Zurich. You can find more information =20 on this webpage: https://www.unizh.ch/cgi-bin/ssl-dir/kurseWS0607#13 =20 The course is free for all members of the University of Zurich and =20 can be booked online. For the rest of you, please send me an email if =20= you are interested in participating. 5. eLML@Wikipedia We do have an eLML entry in the English and German version of =20 Wikipedia. For reasons not known to me the German version has been =20 proposed to be deleted. The decision will be made in three days and I =20= would like to kindly ask you to post your comments on the Wikipedia =20 website under this link: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELML (Geman only, sorry) So much news for the moment. Dear eLML-Newsletter subscribers, It has been three month since the release of eLML 3.0 and since the =20 latest newsletter. After a quiet summer I am back with some eLML-news: 1. Next Update 2. eLML courses 3. Conferences 4. Future projects 5. Varia 1. Next Update: Currently we are working on a minor eLML update 3.01 fixing some =20 small bugs and implementing some enhancements. The release is due for =20= the first week of September and will be announced on this list. =20 Please remember: If you find bugs do not hesitate to submit them =20 using our Sourceforge bugtracker (http://sourceforge.net/projects/=20 elml/). 2. eLML courses: - The planned eLML Tutorial at the GMW Conference in Zurich will not =20 be held but I will still be around at the conference to answer your =20 questions or comments about eLML. Please drop me an email if you =20 would like to meet. - In November 2006 Michael Ziege and myself are giving an eLML =20 Workshop at the University of Zurich. 3. Conferences: - In two weeks (9th of September) I will present eLML together with =20 the GITTA eLearning project at the EUGISES conference in Poland =20 (http://eugises.org/). Since this conference has its focus on GIS =20 technology the eLML part will be minor. - If you are interested in eLML conference publications I would =20 rather recommend downloading the April 2006 WEBIST - Web Information =20 and Technology - Conference paper from the eLML website (http://=20 www.elml.ch/website/en/html/about_furtherReading.html) - On Friday 22nd of September the MELS-Team (see under "Varia") will =20 present the open source learning management system OLAT together with =20= eLML at the "Marketplace" of the GMW Conference (http://=20 www.gmw06.ch). If you would like to meet us there, please send me a =20 short email. Thanks. 4. Future project: - There are two main projects running at the moment. The first one is =20= the creation of an eLML WYSIWYG editor. Thomas Comiotto (University =20 of Zurich) is working on a web-frontend for eLML. Using a WYSIWYG-=20 like editor you will be able to create and edit valid eLML lessons. =20 The release of this open source tool is planned for the end of the =20 year. We will inform through this newsletter about upcoming releases. - Another project Michael Ziege and Timon Roth (both University of =20 Zurich) are working on is a XSLT transformation file for converting =20 eLML lessons into valid LaTeX files. This means that your lessons =20 will be available in the LaTeX format and can be edited, converted =20 (eg. into PDF) etc. using all the available LaTeX tools. 5. Varia For those of you who know me personally :-) I am no longer at the =20 Institute of Geography. I switched and work now for the Multimedia =20 and E-Learning Services (MELS), a subdivision of the IT Services =20 University of Zurich. This group is responsible for creating e-=20 learning content and released in 1999 an open source learning =20 management systems called OLAT (Online Learning And Training). =20 Version 5 will be released on September 26th and for those of you =20 interested in a good alternative to Moodle and WebCT have a look at =20 http://www.olat.org or visit us at the GMW "Marktstand" on Friday =20 22nd in Zurich. Dear eLML-Newsletter subscribers, With todays release of eLML 3.01 we would like to "officially" =20 release eLML version 3! eLML 3.0 has been around for some weeks now but we decided to wait =20 for version 3.01 (including some bugfixes, updated man-pages etc.) =20 until we informed via website and newsletter about the update. So =20 what's new with eLML 3? The four main points are: 1. Everything got easier in eLML 3 :-) 2. Full support for CSS 3. We introduced an "elml" namespace 4. The website http://www.elml.ch has totally been updated Some more details about new features: - A CSS class can be attributed to most eLML elements now - Default CSS classes are used throughout eLML - A configuration file is used now for setting parameters - Default parameters have been introduced: eLML will now work even if =20= you dont supply any parameters at all. - The index (by alphabet) has been introduced officially - Both the manual and the testesson are now part of the website =20 (under "documentation") - New attributes have been defined (eg. sorting styles for =20 bibliography etc.) - Using the "visible" attribute pages can be hidden (eg. =20 bibliography, glossary) or made visible only in online or print version - The alignment of multimedia objects has been updated using CSS - Bugfixes and more... The updated procedure has already been sent to the eLML-Users list =20 (don't forget to subscribe to the eLML-Users list if you are an =20 active eLML-user!) and will not be described here. Please do refer to =20= the new eLML website for detailed information about downloading, =20 installing etc. Thanks for your interested in eLML. Feel free to forward this =20 newsletter to whomever is interested. For support questions please =20 refer to http://www.elml.ch/website/en/html/manual_support.html Bye Jo=EBl Fisler ___________________________________________ Jo=EBl Fisler - GITTA Project Department of Geography - Y25L04 University of Zurich - Campus Irchel Winterthurerstrasse 190 CH-8057 Zurich / Switzerland Phone: +41 44 635 52 52 Fax: +41 44 635 68 48 E-Mail: fi...@ge... -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Dear eLML-News subscribers, Since today eLML version 2.50 stable is available for download on the =20= eLML website. The big step from 2.02 to 2.50 is caused by a new =20 folder structure used in eLML. Now there is a clear separation =20 between the core code used by all projects and the project specific =20 code. In detail: Now there is a core folder that is stored on the =20 Sourceforge CVS server and there is a project folder specific to each =20= project using eLML. The layout templates and configuration files are =20 now part of the project folder and not of the Sourceforge CVS =20 repository anymore. To test the eLML 2.50 stable version, please =20 download the ZIP file and unzip it. You will have a folder called =20 "eLML_v2-50" containing all necessary files on your desktop. Please =20 both the eLML/TestLesson and the gitta/IntroToDBS demo lesson (both =20 the german and the english version) already contain the final XHTML =20 and PDF files. Feel free to delete them and try to transform the =20 lesson for yourself. For an up-to-date manual on how to install eLML =20 please point your browser at: http://elml.ch/download_eclipse.html Some further changes of eLML version 2.50: - - Better separation between projects possible - - SCORM and IMS CP are now both supported - - XHTML 1.0 code is W3C valid - - Better support for multimedia elements - - Bugfixes in both the online and the print version - - New glossary tooltip that should work on all browsers - - Many more minor changes... If you work with eLML developers version from the CVS server: Please =20 subscribe yourself to the eLML-Users Mailinglist (http://=20 lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/elml-users) since all changes =20 are discussed there. Thank you! Have fun! Dear subscribers of the eLML-News mailinglist, eLML introduced today a distinction between a stable and a developer release. Furthermore both releases are available in an updated version. The difference between these versions are: - Stable release: Available on Sourceforge as ZIP package download (contains all files) - Developer release: Available on Sourceforge via CVS (contains ONLY "core" files) The stable release 2.02 has been released yesterday and contains all the latest bugfixes as described in the read me file. It is the LAST version using the old folder structure. The developer release 2.5 with is available on CVS since this morning and has a totally new folder structure! The CVS (developer) release now only contains the core files of eLML, all the rest (lessons, config files, layout templates etc.) have been taken out of the Sourceforge eLML CVS repository! Please refer to the eLML-Users mailing list or the manual under http://elml.ch/download_eclipse.html for more information about the new eLML folder structure. The next stable release 2.5 containing the new folder structure is planned for mid-January 2006. Unlike the developer release on the CVS server, the stable release will in future still contain all the necessary files (including demo-lessons etc.) needed for a nearly out- of-box installation of eLML. Thanks for your interest in eLML. Dear eLML-news subscribers, It has been three months now since our last news on this list. Well this does not mean that we didn't do anything - in the contrary :-) If you are an eLML user and want to stay informed more regularly about changes and updates, please subscribe to the eLML-Users Mailinglist at http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/elml-users The reason for this e-mail is that eLML version 2.01 has been released. This sounds like a small update but many workdays have been spent to fix bugs, add new templates, update the structure etc. The main change is that the content folder has a new structure now. Instead of beeing sorted by language, the lessons are now sorted by project, which makes more sense. Then some new features have been added: - a first version of an index (besides a glossary) - a separate CSS file for printing has been introduced - new layout templates have been added - units can now be marked by the tutor as optional for the student - new multimedia elements (e.g. X3D) are supported - a bugtracker link can be added to the footer Besides that, the elml.ch webpage has also been updated. The new eLML layout works perfectly on Firefox but we are still fixing some minor bugs on Windows Internet Explorer. We added a new manual for Eclipse/Oxygen users, since this combination is for most authers the ideal working environment (platform independent and partly open source). Check http://elml.ch/download_eclipse.html for this manual. Feedback is always appreciated! We also printed some eLML and GITTA flyers. If you are working with eLML and/or GITTA and would like some flyers for a conferences, a presentation or a workshop, please send me an email and I will ship some flyers to you.
