First, I should ask you whether you installed as
    Administrator or as
a regular user. If you installed as Administrator, I
    recommend you
uninstall it and try re-installing as a regular user; or if you
installed as a regular user, try re-installing as Administrator.
Then try running MAS again. (You probably want to run it as
    a regular
user.) And let me know what happens.

If the above experiment does not fix the problem, it will
    help if you
can send me some debugging information so that I can get a
    better idea
of what is going on. To do this, perform the following
    procedure:

(Note: These instructions are for NT. This procedure may be
    slightly
different on XP or Windows 2000.)

    Left-click on the "MAS" icon.
    Click on "Properties".
    Select the "Shortcut" tab.
In the "Target" slot, add: " -debug".
(Add everything within the double quotes, including the
    leading space - but
    not the quotes.)
    Click OK.
Then start up the program by double-clicking on the "MAS" icon.

A "DOS" window will appear with debugging information.
Unfortunately, Windows does not provide a straightforward
    way to save the
debugging output. So you will need to note what is printed
    on the resulting
"DOS" window and manually copy it into a file, or at least
    provide a
good summary (unless you can figure out a way to redirect
    the information
    automatically into a file).

Then click on "Start a MAS Session".
This will result in more info. being printed in the "DOS"
    window.
Include this additional info. in your report.
    Email me the resulting report.

To turn off the debugging, follow the same procedure as
    above and remove
" -debug" from the "Target" slot and hit "OK".

Note that I'm pretty busy these days. I will try to respond
    to your
response as soon as possible, but it may take me a while to
    get around to
analyzing the problem and coming up with a solution.

Just wanted to mention that I have exactly the same problem
with Windows XP (and 1.6.6q). Your suggestion to add -debug
doesn't work (windows posts an error msg). I tried to run
from cmd line with -debug (and redirect outbut to file) but
the program apparently opens a completely different window
(I see it flash briefly then close) with the debugging data.

How does the windows version know where to find the data
files (how do the environmental variables get set)? Could
that be the problem? I don't see a .ini or .cfg type of file
    anywhere...

    Thanks for any help.

A fix has been found for this problem. The fix is to
install Microsoft's Service Pack 2 for XP. This fix has
worked for everyone I know of who has tried it (two or three
people). My guess is that if you are running into this
access denied problem, there is a 95% chance that the fix
will also work for you. If it doesn't, please let me know.

Addendum: Apparently the fix is not complete. I've gotten
reports of people having problems when mas is configured to
get its data from the web (from yahoo.com). I'm not sure if
this is related to the "access denied" problem or whether it
happens for everyone. I haven't gotten enough reports to
    draw any conclusions.

If mas works on your xp system with file-based data, but not
with web-based (yahoo.com) data, the following fix (updating
an out-of-date mas_httprc file, described near the bottom of
the article) may be the only thing you need to get web-based
    data working:
